I WON’T BE ANOTHER STATISTIC

I won’t be another statistic

Some kid who has low self esteem

I’ll raise my hand and ask my question

And sit with a confident beam.

I won’t give others the chance to mock me

I’ll walk with my head held up high

I won’t get mad, angry or sad

Even when they laugh that I don’t know the value of pi.

 

I won’t be another statistic

Some kid who depends on others to be happy

I’ll not give in to depression even I’m tempted to

And shut myself out when I think I can’t cope.

I’ll not let suicidal thoughts fill my mind

I’ll reach out and seek as much counsel as I can find

I won’t let myself think I’m not good enough

I’ll stand up to my demons even when it seems tough.

 

I won’t be another statistic

Some dumb kid hooked on crack

I’ll stand my ground and say NO to drugs

I’ll resist peer pressure and get right back on track.

I won’t let heroin and cocaine dictate my moods

I won’t give in and be another drug addict

I’ll stay polite, courteous and not be rude

I won’t let narcotics pass my life’s verdict.

 

I won’t be another statistic

Some silly ambitionless girl

I won’t be fooled into any fruitless relationship

That’ll dampen my super bright future.

I won’t get pregnant before I’m ready

I won’t allow myself be deceived by any vulture

I’ll take absolute pride in my virginity

And put my hope and trust in the Supreme Divinity.

 

I won’t be another statistic

Some unruly child who’s not aspirational

I’ll set my short and long term goals

I’ll be a teenager the society finds functional.

I won’t be cowed into doing stupid and wasteful things

I’ll be firm and say NO to misleading friends

I’ll concentrate exceedingly on the greater now

So I can bountifully reap what I sow.

 

I won’t be another statistic

Some teenager the world doesn’t know

I’ll work hard and make a difference

And bow politely with a smile when people say “wow”.

I won’t be just another Nigerian teenager

Who’ll hide under a truckload of excuses

I’ll strive to be the renowned dogged changer

And make the most of great opportunities.

Yes, I won’t be another statistic
